To remove the shock, do I really need to remove the battery, subframe, etc.?

No. Jack up the bike so the rear wheel is off the ground, and slip a board under the tire to support it. Disconnect the links from the bottom of the shock, and remove the bolt at the top (the nut is welded on the other side).
