The novel actually belongs to the young adult literature classification. From there you can break it down to a romance book but it can also be considered fantasy. It does not really fall under suspense or thriller because of the fantastical elements.
Whenever a story has non-real characters such as vampires, werewolves, or fairies, the book then falls into the fantasy genre by default. Many fantasy novels have an underlying romantic theme. Yes, the films based on the Twilight books focus on the same aspects.
The film goes through the discovery of the vampires and the romance of Bella and Edward. While the story is told a bit faster as a story often is in a film, it does hit all the major plot points in the book.
