Many people can forgive but not forget. Trust is such a fragile thing. If your partner has always trusted you completely...and you cheat on them...they may be able to forgive you but that little nagging caution is always in the back of their mind.

They will always be alert to a sign, a wrong word, a phone call, a letter, an email...anything that looks like they're going to get their heart zapped again. It could take years for them to relax and trust you completely again, or it may never happen. All depends on the person.

Parents seem to be more able to forgive and forget when their kids screw up, knowing that mistakes are all part of growing up and learning. Regaining the trust of a partner in a love relationship is much more difficult. One thing that may help would be to sit down with your partner when you're both relaxed and in a good mood, look them straight in the eye, admit what you did, offer no excuses for your action, just give them a sincere apology and a promise to never, ever do anything like that again.

Ask for their forgiveness. Tell them how much you care and how important they are to you. Ask them what you can do to regain their trust.

A sincere and heartfelt apology along with putting the entire issue out in the open, might just help your partner heal and forgive...it gives the issue some closure. Trust is... Trust is not worrying about someone else. You don't worry they're going to mess with you or lie to you or cheat you. I know I trust someone if I'm not worrying about what they do, obviously :)I believe someone earns trust my not doing bad things to me.

I don't trust a lot of people though, so it takes a long time. If you're trying to convince yourself of something, then it's not true. I honestly don't believe you can re-earn trust in a situation where what you've done is very bad (cheating, stealing, etc.) unless a lot of time passes between the bad deed and the forgiveness.

No one decides if it's been enough time, it just is or it isn't. To help someone trust you again, you have to not do anything bad to them. Sometimes the person will never trust you again - that's just life, and you have to move on.

There is nothing you can do to prove yourself. The issue is with them. Sources: My knowledge .

1 well the truth is... the thing that earned the distrust is more of a "could have" or "maybe" thing..... someone called the police on someone else, in a fit of confusion and hurt, and the police came out, gave a nice long lecture and then left, noone went to jail and nothing bad happened except there was mistrust between the couple... the couple later (5mths) reconciled, made up... Noone was physically abused, no one was cheated on, it was just a bad night, the couple never fought before this night it was not anything worth all the drama that came about afterwards, feelings were hurt, people were concerned and that is just that..... either way, the couple came to terms and are happy togethe now, but the families are still holding grudges, harboring ill will.... this would not matter to most, people say you marry the child not the family.. but unfortunately this is a very tight knit family and family does matter... one where they spend every weekend together doing family things.... they live near each other and spend time with each other.... and this hostility has caused the couple to refrain from activities with the family or when they do go to their perspective family gatherings they are miserable because their mate is not there and they know they are not welcome there..... it's a Modern day Romeo and Juliet if you've ever seen one! .
