It's moot at best. Every good democracy has only survived 200 years and then it evolved into something else. Lincoln mentioned in his Gettysburg Address (Nov.19,1863) "...and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, ..." That sounds like State Socialism to me, although I don't think it's what he meant..

Socialism is an economic system where the government owns most or all of the key industries in an economy and directs them in a planned system. So, the government decides to -say- build more houses or make more toothpaste as part of a planned system, rather than one dictated by consumer demand. The US does not have an economic system that is like this.

Consumer demand is the fundamental motor of the economy. Winston Churchill said somewhere that all Tories were socialists when it came to agriculture and military spending. The US is no exception to this.

Millions of taxpayer dollars are spend on agricultural subsidies, the military and weapons systems. At present, something like 30 cents in every US taxpayer Dollar is spent on weapons and the military. This is a staggering percentage and one wonders whether the USA can sustain this indefinitely.It is not surprising, giving these levels of spending, that the US languishes at around 38th in the life expectancy rankings, far behind many poorer countries.

As the federal government usurps more power from the states we are moving to the left towards socialism.

The govt got involved in education and welfare when Congress passed the "Fair Deal" legislation in like 1931, Social Security a bit later, and the GI Bill in like 1945. The latest GI Bill is a joke. The highways are falling apart and need like $400 billion just to get them back to 1955 levels. States and schools are having to borrow money just to scrape by, without even beginning to fund the $80 billion needed just to keep the classroom ceilings from falling down.( You can ask yourself how well this decreasing socialism has worked out for you, and for the guy living in the next refrigerator carton ).

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
