Hello I am always fascinated by the folks who comment on questions like this that seem to know very little about the question they are answering. In candor I must disclose that I work at UC Merced as an Assistant Vice Chancellor so while I have real knowledge about the campus I also feel you need to know that I work here. So UC Merced is the newest campus of the University of California.
Under the California Master Plan UC is charged with education the top 12.5 % of the high school graduating classes of California high schools. Those are the students who enroll at UC Merced they will be as a group better prepared and more accomplished that the overall averages of either Sac State or SF State. The students are not bad they are on a percentage basis better than most college students across America. The faculty here are engaged in remarkable research in biology, and undergraduates get the opportunity to participate in that research here.
While our faculty are deeply engaged in research none of them has won a Nobel prize. They are for the most part relatively young and on the trajectory for such awards but not yet recipients. Our faculty are doing breathtaking work around the world but also at Yosemite where the Sierra Nevada Research Group is deeply involved the future of the park and the montains as a whole.
UC Merced is small we take pride in the fact that we almost always answer the phone when you call, or in time of great demand we will call you back within a day. Also as a new university we are working together , faculty, staff and students to establish the traditions that will be in use here for hundreds of years. If you want a challenge then this is the place for you.
Come join us in building the futre at UC Merced.
Yes, it is a new school, and it is very hard to get a new university campus onto the same level of reputation as state campuses that have been around for more than 50 or 100 years. But Merced's reputation is not poor, they just don't have as much history to base real opinions on. The campus is great, I've been there.
And I know they are trying their hardest to tempt the best and brightest to attend and help raise awareness of there programs, but that takes time. The quality of your education there should be no different than that of any other state college campus, and might be better because of the up-to-date labs and technology. And, you might get more personal attention at a smaller school, especially if you turn out to be a big fish in a small pond.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
