In your first code snippet you're escaping a result of the query instead of the query itself. Then you're trying to access the result without reading it first with mysql_fetch_assoc or similar function. At the end you have a gaping SQL injection vulnerability plus 8 separate queries when one would suffice.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
