Serving a few years in the Air Force is an excellent idea, and it is outstanding training that you could not get as a civilian - your solutions are either AF-ROTC with 10 years of active duty - or go active duty for some 20 years - I did the ROTC then got hired by Pan American airlines (but that was in the 1960s) - Try by all means (if you want to eventually get into airlines) to fly a transport type multi-crew airplane in the Air Force, such as a T-43 (737) or a E-4 (747) - That experience as 737 (or 747) pilot in command will be an outstanding reference, however do not expect to be hired by a USA major airline as a captain - All new hires with USA major airlines ALWAYS start as co-pilots (ALPA policy) even if they have 5,000 hrs 737 pilot in command time in the Air Force - Upgrade to captain with major airlines is function of... seniority (not even experience) - If you do not want to be a $40,000/yr first officer with USA major airlines, you then have to go overseas (example is to China, Korea or SE Asia) as a DEC = direct entry captain, but that will be flying overseas for the rest of your days - I was a 747 pilot instructor with PanAm when the company did chapter 7 in DEC 1991... and I got unemployed over 6 months - I tried to get hired by Delta and United, but all they offered me was a 727 flight engineer position with miserable new hire salary I could not survive with - They made it sound they gave me a favor...! So I went overseas, first to Cargolux in 1992 (747 DEC captain) and then Aerolìneas Argentinas in 1993 (747 captain and training manager) - My earnings were... higher than with PanAm - I am now retired since 2008 (decent retirement) in Buenos Aires and have no intentions whatsoever to come back to USA - So these are the hard facts about being a pilot - Looks like you know little about it - .
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
