Was the Great Irish Famine of the 1840's that left 1.5 million dead a failure of capitalism?

Lol @ all of the misinformed apologists of capitalism. They clearly have no idea what they are talking about and resort to straw men and red herrings, as usual. In the US, most people like the English more than the Russians, so fewer people are willing to label the Irish famine for the genocide that it was, as shown by the following: Queen Victoria's economist, Nassau Senior, expressed his fear that existing policies "will not kill more than one million Irish in 1848 and that will scarcely be enough to do much good."

When an eye-witness urged a stop to the genocide-in-progress, Trevelyan replied: "We must not complain of what we really want to obtain." Trevelyan insisted that all reports of starvation were exaggerated, until 1847. He then declared it ended and refused entry to the American food relief ship Sorciére.

Thomas Carlyle; influential British essayist, wrote; "Ireland is like a half-starved rat that crosses the path of an elephant. What must the elephant do? Squelch it - by heavens - squelch it." "Total Annihilation;" suggested The Times leader of September 2, 1846; and in 1848 its editorialists crowed "A Celt will soon be as rare on the banks of the Shannon as the red man on the banks of Manhattan."

It was man-made. There were still enough potatoes to feed the people, but the Irish were intentionally cut off. Remember that the state exists to protect the interests of the capitalists.

Rule of the minority over the majority. Even if the 100 million number against communism was factually correct, it does not begin to hold up against the hundreds of millions killed by capitalism in the slave trade, the colonization of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australasia (e.g., the genocide of Native Americans), wars of conquest, including the two World Wars, and environmental devastation such as Bhopal in India. Capitalism makes 30 000 people die worldwide due to malnutrition every single day.

This is about 10 million a year. Even if we ignore all wars of the bloodiest century in human history, so far the 20th, that were waged in the name of capitalist expansion or imperialist competition for hegemony, then just this single number would still dwarf any crimes of the USSR, China or all other so-called socialist countries combined (assuming the number was correct in the first place). Capitalism has killed over 490 million people.

Not according to those who worship Capitalism. Since the capitalists achieved their goals, it was the right thing to do. This is what laissez faire means.

That is what many want the government to do today, drop all regulations and let the capitalists do what they want. Edit: I'm amazed at how many people here are blaming the famine on the fact that the Irish just didn't have enough potatoes! Does it ever occur to you that something was wrong from the beginning that their entire diet was based on a simple carbohydrate?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
