The Little Prince" What a wonderful story on the surface and beyond! Even as a young child I knew when the fox told the little prince the following that it was special: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly: what is essential is invisible to the eye. " I have remembered those lines always and read them to my daughter.

The Little Engine That Could" My very favorite book when I was very little (3-4 years old). At my behest, my mother and others read it to me over and over. I had a record of someone reading the story also and that, too, I played over and over.To this day, I think of that story when I feel I have a dream that cannot be fulfilled, I remember that story and just start out.

A little older, my friend and I became obsessed with the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series. I loved these because they were about kids figuring things out and solving problems (I guess it goes along with the theme of "I think I can, I think I can") - these stories made me feel that just because I was a kid didn't mean I was powerless. And Robinson Crusoe.

I guess the same theme, now that I think about it! Good question and fun to think about to answer! The Paperbag Princess The heroine in tPP finds herself suddenly with nothing and her fiance has been whisked away by a dragon. Instead of moping around, she finds the only thing left to wear (a paperbag) and goes off to resuce him. To do so, she uses her smarts to outwit the dragon, recuses the prince, realizes he's not really her type, and doesn't get married after all while still very clearly having a happy ending.

I learned from it that: 1. Princesses can kick butt. 2.It's no use to mope about things.

Be active. Work to make a solution.3. Use your head - creative problem solving is important.

4. Just because everyone before you has done something one way is no reason to blindly continue to do so. Maybe there is good reason it is done that way, maybe it should change.

5. You don't need to have a relationship to feel like a worthwhile human being.6. Personality is way more important than looking perfect and having all the right stuff.

I mean, if you asked me then what I learned from it, I would not have spouted off this list. I was probably five when I read it for the first time. However, those are lessons that it (admittedly subtly) gives to children who read it.

I still go back and read it (to the little girl across the street or other children I see) often enough to see them now. Absolutely, but the effects of many childhood stories are subtile and have a cumulative effect. Wow just trying to think of all the books my father, grandmother and I read when I was young is so wonderful. My Dad used to read the Funny Pages of the paper to me every Sunday afternoon and he would make a different voice for each character.

I do the same with my daughter now. I guess that does not count as a book, but it influenced my philosophy of how to raise my own child. Above all books, the Bible, with all those wonderful stories and characters, had the most influence on me.

Even tho I went through a period of rather hostile disbelief I still returned to the God of my fathers. I used to have an illustrated Children's Bible story book and I remember looking through it for hours and imagining that I was Moses or Joshua or King David. I even remember how brave I thought Ester was for saving her people.

I remember thinking about how I would have saved Jesus from getting crucified (I didn't realize that his sacrifice was necessary then). There were many other books that influenced me. Alas, I can't remember all their names, but does that mean the influence was any less?

Here are some I still have and have read to my own daughter: Donkey - Donkey by Roger Duvoisin influenced me to be comfortable with myself. A Little Old Man by Natalie Norton influenced me to be happy with small things and comforts. Mike Mulligan and s Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton influenced me to believe that all things, even the old, have a use.

I also remember reading stories about cowboys and knights, and I think they influenced me to be more self reliant and to take up for the weak and be polite to women. Would I be the same if I had not read these books? I think not.

But, I can't say that there was an epiphany moment that one book triggered to affect the rest of my life. It may be that childhood stories accumulate in the mind like bricks around a house. Remove a few and no harm done, remove many and the house may collapse.

2 txteacher, regarding your answer ""The Little Prince"": I didn't read that one until high school French class, but I loved it, too. So many great quotes! One of my favorites is: "If you love a flower that lives on a star, it is sweet to look at the sky at night." .

I am looking for books a child could read with a parent concerning the "facts of life.

What 3 books (fiction or nonfiction) would you list as those that most influenced your life or had the greatest impact.

When I was a child, I remember watching an animated movie with a kangaroo, a baby kanga (or small child).......

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
