We have fire ants in our yard. We live on 1.25 acres near Ashokie, NC. We have tried the remedies I found in an organic gardening book (pouring hot water on the ant hill) and a neighbor's advice (pouring gasoline on the ant hill) and it appears that it kills the ants on the surface but that they dig up again a few feet away - sometimes two or three new hills appear.

We have been told that their tunnels can go down 10 or 12 feet. I think these ants can destroy plants and we have a lot of ornamentals and are (or were) about to put in some fruit trees. Of course, also they are pretty nasty biters.

Simple Tried and true 2 cups of club soda, pour directly from above, it takes about 2 days to see complete results and it kills the queen so the mound will not be moved to another part of the yard.

The organic approach you haven't mention is orange peels. Try tearing them up in little pieces and place on top of the hill. Some will die, but they will move and start another hill.

The only effective thing I have found is Amdro. Sprinkle it around the hill and the little critters will take it inside and die. But the best part is that neighboring hills will invade the dead hill and steal the Amdro and take it into their hill and die.

I put some on my ant hills and a few weeks later my neighbor across the road had dead ant hills and didn't know what killed them. I live next to a creek, so ants are always coming this way. But this stuff 2 or 3 times a year keeps them off of my grandchildren.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
