Similar questions: find freelance writing job pay money short stories.
Um, I think you have it a little backwards. You write short stories and then you get a copy of Writer's Market and try to shop them around. Or you choose a magazine and write a story specifically for that market.
Writer's Market will show you what a magazine is looking for. For example, with science fiction, there's only a handful of paying markets, so you target those markets. And if you can't sell the story, then you put the story in a drawer until a new market opens up.
But there's few markets that will pay you good money for short stories. Most writers hold full-time jobs and write for pleasure or as a hobby.
I'm lucky enough to make a nice chunk of my living off my writing (albeit I tend toward non-fiction) but can tell you that people willing to give me money to write for them don't grow on the trees, to use a cliche. DanZee is 100% right in that you have to work to sell what you write, which involves a well-worn copy of "Writer's Market" and often many, many query letters. Do you know how to do a market analysis of periodicals?
That's an important aspect of targeting those queries, so if you haven't had any experience doing that, do some research on that topic. I don't have a recent copy of Writer's Market but there may be a guideline to follow in it. It will have a wealth of info in there for you.
I might also note that people who hire you to write hire you to write what they want you to write, too, which may not coincide with what you want to write. As DanZee notes, each outlet for your writing has their own requirements and audience, so as writers, it's up to us to find out what they want and try to give it to them. Bottom line, it's a lot of work and while it'd sure be nice, it's pretty unlikely someone is going to come along and offer to pay our bills while we sit home and churn out endless words that may or may not have anything to do with their own needs and wants.
That said, I love writing, it's opened doors and a whole new life to me, so I wish you all the luck in the world.
