Raphael was born Raffaello Santo in Urbino, Italy in 1483. He was apprenticed to the painter, Pietro Perugino in Perugia in 1500. He soon moves to Florence, the heart of the Renaissance.
In 1508 he receives important commisions from Pope Julius II in Rome. His most famous was to decorate a room in the Pope's new residence in the Vatican. This was the famous "Stanze".
It consists of a series of frescoes depicting heroes from the Bible, mythology, and saints and philosophers from ancient times. The most famous of these is the "School of Athens". He is also best known for his many beautiful paintings of the Madonna and Child.
He painted with great warmth, elegance, and great color. Pope Leo X appointed him as architect and building director for the new St. Peter's Church in Rome. He died in 1520. Many art critics consider him the greatest painter of the Italian Renaissance.
