Interesting question Tristan. Hmmm. I suppose the oldest groups I listen to regularly would be the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel.
As for the newer stuff, it's tough to say. I'm not really sure when a lot of bands were formed, but I feel pretty good about answering Herzog (I think their first release was around 2011 or 12). 1.
Some yes, some no. I have found that there are a lot of albums that don't so much lose effectiveness with age but with the number of times hearing it. For instance, a whole lot of my favorite stuff from the 90s that I used to listen to all the time I can only really get excited about once or twice a year now.
I've just heard it too many times. Sometimes an album can sound pretty dated (particularly stuff from the 80s) because of certain production aspects, but generally I can look past that and get into the meat of the songs. Certain fad based tricks can really hurt the validity of certain songs though.
2. I don't think periods really trump each other. I think it's all about the cream rising to the top.
There is great stuff in all time periods and there is a lot of crap and a ton in the middle. I think what happens with older music is that people look at periods through rose colored glasses, forgetting about all of the crap and mediocrity that time has kind of thrown out of the general consciousness, but all in all I think the bell curve is pretty similar for all time periods. 3.
I feel like Herzog would be my answer, but I also have a feeling like I am forgetting an act or two that might challenge them.
Oldest: (that I REGULARLY listen to) would have to be mid-to-late 60's stuff like The Rolling Stones, Cream, Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath. Newest: Probably Royal Blood, formed in 2013. BA: Sometimes.
Sometimes not. I don't think there's a set formula. Music acts tend to have a "period" when they write and record their best material.
For some, it happens early, like on their debut album. Others improve after a couple of albums and hit their "prime" period. BA2: I just think there's good music, and bad music, in every musical era.
I do like a lot of older music from when I was growing up, but I also like great new music that is being written and recorded today. BA3: Probably Royal Thunder, a band I just discovered a couple of weeks ago because of Alexis Carver's answer to one of my questions. I'm really into them right now, best new band I've discovered in awhile.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
