Depends on their ages... But here's some of the books that I've read to my son (Age 5): 1. ) Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin & Betsy Lewin 2. ) If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff and Felicia Bond 3.) Goodnight, Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd 4.

) Chika, Chika, Boom, Boom by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault I could literally go on and on and on, but those are the four that constantly get pulled out and asked to be read. (Of course, you also can't really go wrong with any of the Dr. Seuss titles, either...) .

Some wonderful books: What a great question! I collect old children’s books myself, and there’s nothing I love more than sharing a special story with my son. This is going to be a very long list, I’m afraid. In fact, I have so much to say on this topic that I seriously considered abandoning my answer; there's just so much to write!

Rather than give up, though, I'll try to hit the high points. Here are some books for children aged 4-8 (or older): The Jenny Linksy books, by Esther Averill. A charming series of stories about a shy little black cat who finds courage when wearing a red scarf.

Jenny has many adventures and many friends, both in the New York City neighborhood where she lives and around the world. The first stories in this series were written in the 1930s, but they're still charming and wonderful for any child who loves cats. Fortunately the whole series is now back in print.

Illustrated by the author in black & white & red. The Otto books, by William Pene du Bois. Before Clifford the big red dog, there was Otto the big yellow dog.

He had many adventures across the world. Originally in French, but beautifully translated. As with many of the books I'm recommending, these were evocatively illustrated by the author - alternating pages are in color. Memorable.

The Tim books by Edward Ardizzone. Another old series, these are the stories of the adventures of a little English boy named Tim who loves the sea. Tim stows away at times, and at other times signs on as a cabin boy.

For some reason many of the ships he sails on end up sinking. These are extremely exciting, touching, and funny books. My six-year-old son positively loves them.

Illustrated beautifully by the author in color and black & white. The Three Little Horses books, by Piet Worm. Three books about three little horses.

In the first one, they disguise themselves as princesses in order to visit a town - only to be found out and jailed when the real princesses turn up! Lovely stories translated from the French, and illustrated by the author in color and black & white. The Mister Penny books by Marie Hall Ets.

This may be the oldest series on my list, but it's one of the best. Mister Penny is an old man with a "family" of farm animals; he works in a factory to feed them all. One day, while he's at work, the animals break into the farm next door and eat themselves silly!

In order to save themselves from being seized by the farmer, they have to learn a lesson about responsibility and work. This story is sure to stay in your child's mind forever, and it's extremely funny - particularly if you like to read using silly voices. It and the two sequels are illustrated by the author in black & white.

They're very funny illustrations, too! The Adventures of Phunsi, by Alison Mason Kingbury. What a wonderful book!

Alas, it's incredibly rare now. It's a little more advanced than the other books I've listed in this section, but I read it to my boy when he was five and he enjoyed it very much. It's a chapter book, about a very fast little zebra who gets caught (along with his mother) in Africa, and gets shipped to a zoo in New York City. He escapes, and has some wild adventures before returning home to his mother at last.

On the way he meets all sorts of odd and funny animals, and there are many songs and poems. The black & white illustrations by the author (who was primarily an illustrator, despite her writing gifts) are lovely. The Cat Who Tasted Cinnamon Toast, by Ann Spencer.

A book for those who love cats and/or high cuisine. Augie, the pet of millionaire Miss Margrove, tastes her cinnamon toast one morning - and after that, there's no going back. Before long he's scooping oysters out of the chowder and making a gastronomic tour of the world in high cuisine.

Featuring a cameo of sorts by Julia Child! It's a very funny book indeed, with large black & white illustrations by the author. A rare gem.

Fair warning, unless you're comfortable pronouncing phrases like truite almondine you may want to practice reading it to yourself before reading it aloud. The Billy And Blaze series by C.W. Anderson. The story of a young boy, his pony, and his dog.

Illustrated by the author in black & white. A little bit old-fashioned, but very exciting and fun. What else?

I'm sure you already know about them, but I wouldn't forgive myself if I neglected to mention Mike Mulligan and Make Way for Ducklings. And the Babar books, of course. And, good grief!

How could I forget the Frog & Toad books? Speaking of which, there's a wonderful DVD which includes several beautifully animated (in claymation) stories of Frog & Toad. I mention that because the voices in those animations are perfect, and well worth imitating if you read the stories aloud.

Now let's see...here are some stories for an eight-year-old: The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. This is a classic series made up of five books, beginning with The Book of Three. There’s also a collection of short stories set in Prydain, featuring many of the characters from the series.

A touching, thoughtful, award-winning series. Kim by Rudyard Kipling. While not technically a fantasy, I’d argue that this is the greatest and most magical book on my list. It’s the story of the adventures a young British orphan boy in colonial India.

Kim (nee Kimball O’Hara) grows up as a native, and the story of his adventures throughout the sub-continent is absolutely amazing. Kipling spent much of his youth in India himself (one of the minor characters is based on his father, and other characters are also based on real historical figures that he knew), and the astonishing mix of cultures in India at that time comes though with incredible excitement and vividness. It’s a coming-of-age story; I’d argue that it’s the coming-of-age story. Some of it may be a little advanced for an eight-year-old, but it's definitely one to have on your shelf for when the time is right.

The Doctor Dolittle books by Hugh Lofting. They begin with The Story of Doctor Dolittle, and there are many more. Be warned, all in-print copies of The Story... have been censored by the publishers out of an idiotic idea of political correctness - a phrase which I hate, but which is accurate in this case.

In the book, the Doctor and his animals traveled to Africa. They were captured by an African king who imprisoned them.In the original text the crown prince released them on the condition that they turn him white, since he was in love with (apparently) a Caucasian woman. The Doctor obliged, while noting that the change would be temporary, the whole thing was silly and that the Prince had a good heart no matter what color he was. Now is that racist, I ask you?

Most modern editions also remove the phrase "white man" throughout, such as "now, Doctor, you will see something no white man has ever seen before". Exactly why this phrase is supposed to be so harmful is beyond my comprehension - it certainly didn’t harm me when I was growing up. In any case, the Dolittle books are highly imaginative (he flies to the Moon on a giant moth in one of them), charmingly old-fashioned in the best sense of the word, and nicely illustrated by the author.

Ghosts and More Ghosts, by Robert Arthur. A collection of wonderful short stories of fantasy, spells, ghosts, and witchcraft. Arthur did a lot of extremely imaginative and readable work; among other things, he originated the Three Investigators series, and wrote many of the earlier books in it.

I do recommend that series, incidentally, but look for copies which feature Alfred tchcock in the openings and epilogues - some later versions were badly re-written to replace tchcock with a fictional celebrity. Arthur wrote, ghosted, and edited quite a few other collections of short horror, mystery, and fantasy stories for young adults on behalf of Alfred They were all excellent and memorable. Unfortunately Amazon.Com’s widgets don’t seem to be listing certain books by Arthur, so here are a couple of direct links: Ghosts and More Ghosts Mystery and More Mystery The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

A classic, not to be missed. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. I'm using this word a lot in this answer, but it's really unavoidable: classic.

And the Narnia books are, undoubtedly, classics of English fantasy literature for children. I’ll note that there is a strong Christian theme in the series, which almost becomes overpowering in the last book. Still, it’s a wonderful series.

The Wind In The Willows, by Kenneth Grahame. Yet another classic of English literature for children. Although written in 6.957, the language is still readable and the humor is timeless.

This is another book which is sometimes unfortunately trimmed by modern editors - not for supposed racism, but there’s one quasi-religious sort-of-pagan chapter which is sometimes removed - so be sure to get a complete edition. The Forgotten Door by Alexander Key. A family finds a lost boy who, they slowly realize, somehow fell to Earth through space from an alien planet.

Very well-written and entertaining. Key is also known for the Witch Mountain books, which were filmed by Disney. Another writer much like Key (although in my opinion more saccharine) is Zenna Henderson - if you likes Key, you'll probably like Henderson as well.

The Portmanteau Book by Thomas Rockwell (who is also the author of How To Eat Fried Worms, another do-not-miss). It’s a unique, incredibly funny book of short stories, art, puzzles (funny puzzles), poetry, a comic book drawn out of words "because the author can’t draw very well" (not true), a recipe book including recipes like "Fried Hall Closet"...an incredibly imaginative work. Of course it’s out of print, but this treasure is absolutely worth the effort of finding a used copy; they’re definitely out there.

If your child likes science fiction, The Runaway Robot by Lester del Rey is a good one. Here's a big list of classic children's books that I posted in my journal. I know I'll kick myself as soon as I post this; there are many more books I'd recommend, but since I have to post this now, I'll have to post any extras in the discussion area.

I have a few favorites including The Lemming Condition By Alan Arkin "The wonderful story of Bubber the Lemming that teaches everyone something about conformity and individual values. " It's a fantastic book that introduces the concept of thinking things out for yourself. harpercollins.com/books/9780062500489/Th... powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=1-97800... amazon.com/Lemming-Condition-Alan-Arkin/... I also enjoyed reading the Arnold Lobel books.

Mouse Soup was one of my favorites. I remember on evening, after the kids were grown, I dug out the old Frog and Toad and books and began to read them for my own pleasure. My husband was cooking and he asked me to read the book aloud.

Over the next week, I ended up reading a book a night. http://books.google.com/books?as_q=&hl=en&num=10&as_epq=Arnold+Lobel&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&cr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&as_rights=&safe=images&sa=X&oi=print&ct=more-books-link&cad=author-navigational "Books to the ceiling, Books to the sky, My pile of books is a mile high. What are good books to read on effective teaching strategies for small gruops of middle school children.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
