I've been earning through mturk for two years and it has really paid off for me. Mturk.com, an Amazon company, allows homeworkers to complete tasks online for various requesters. Anyone with internet access can get paid doing transcriptions, answering questions, identifying different tasks, and other jobs.
Not only does Mturk allow workers to work anywhere that there is an internet connection, without need to report to an office, but the variety of jobs allows them to pick and choose which ones they want to do. Many of the jobs can be done very quickly. One can choose to be paid through Amazon gift certificates, or through cash that Amazon will transfer to one's bank account.
Some requesters even pay bonuses. The forum for turkers is turkers.proboards80.com/. The people there are generally helpful and not at all snarky.

There are some legitimate work at home opportunities. There are some companies that have networks of customer service specialists who work from their home. These customer service reps make a fairly decent wage ($8 for training period, up to $10 - $12/hour after that), and get full benefits as well.
The most notable of these is Alpine Access. The one problem with AA is that they only hire in certain states. WAHM forum has a list of most of the good work at home opportunities here: wahm.com/ It's aimed at moms, but I'm sure men could get just as much out of it.
Other work from home opportunities would build upon talents you have, such as writing, bookkeeping, drafting, etc. You could become a freelance or contract worker. One caveat: never, never, never take a work at home opportunity without thoroughly checking it out. There are TONS of work at home scams.
Ask questions on reputable forums, such as WAHM (or on Askville, for that matter). Be sure what you're getting into is real. Also, in general, never send anyone any money for "start-up.
