Fundamental causes. • The citizenry’s lack of life skills: I’m referring to critical thinking, financial planning, and general research. The reason for this ignorance is is a side effect of our country’s utilitarian mindset; we think of education as only job training.
This isn’t just the evil corporations, as anti-corporate activists see colleges as activist factories. The solution is for anybody who can influence children and students to teach these skills, and anybody reading this to learn said skills themselves. Focusing on the job is good, but individualism is part of our cultural mindset too.
Why are those particular skills important? Critical thinking keeps people from getting conned by propaganda techniques and logical fallacies, which is how political and corporate advertising get most people. Research -- through libraries, databases, search engines -- are how we find facts about claims, and better determine their validity.
Financial planning helps people acquire the financial power to afford charity and legal aid. With these life skills, a lot of our problems will solve themselves. • Fossil fuels: Wars are fought over politics, religion, and resources, and the current fought-over resource is oil.
While most of our power plants run on coal, that’s still problematic because it’s polluting and in finite supply. Sure, there’s plenty of oil shale in C-type asteroids, but we barely have the technology for another moon landing. We need new energy sources and we need several of them: solar, wind, OTEC (my personal favorite), fusion (fission’s too messy), and more.
If we don't find new energy sources, we'll either have to die in our sick or give in to the Luddites. This isn’t to say they don’t have a point about over-consumption... • Toleration of inefficient and inelegant products: This can tie in to lack of critical thinking, but is important to mention on it’s own. Although she misquotes Victor Lebow, Anne Leonard has a point in that we buy too much stuff.
The problem isn’t consumerism, but passive consumerism; we tolerate products that can’t be modified or upgraded, and we lack the desire to upgrade them anyway (typing this on a Mac, I am quite guilty of this, but at least I don't throw away old electronics). We need to raise awareness of unmodifiable products and encourage entrepreneurs (remember financial planning? ) to create and market configurable and upgradable consumer goods.
• Poverty: People become poor through bad education, bad decisions, or bad luck. Entire books, often conflicting, have proposed solutions, but few most agree that we should level up and not level down. (No, this isn’t a complaint about wealthier people paying more taxes.
) • Crime: Includes terrorism and white-collar crime. I’m sorry to say that I don’t know how to solve this one, but keeping police officers and judges honest is the best place I can think of to start. How to do that is worthy of its own question.

The rest of _The Story of Stuff_ is worth watching as well, though heavy on the emotional appeals.
In my opinion... 1) Iraq war - get us out and quit wasting money and ruining lives. This is a money pit we can not afford, and it does nothing positive for the US 2) Our dependence on cheap oil - need to develop an alternative *viable* to petroleum. - no bio-deisel, no ethanol and no hydrogen).
Do some research on peak oil (we're in it) and the Olduvai Trench - starts in about 8 years. Cheap petroleum affects more than the price of gas and diesel fuel. 3) Social Security - need to institute a program to keep this solvent - raise taxes 1.5%, remove the FICA cap, means testing for Medicare recipients.
4) Environment - need the same fuel standards on SUVs and pickup trucks. Limit passenger vehicle engines to 80 HP. 5) The Economy and federal debt - need to quit borrowing to spend and raise taxes to pay off our debt.
Also need to penalize US companies for outsourcing and offshoring to raise their profits. 6) Illegal immigration - flat out it's allowing criminals into our country who drain the system. 7) Global warming - this will kill off the human species if we aren't careful 8) Affordable medical care for every citizen in this country - socialize it.
"Terrorism" isn't even on the top 5, and probably not on the top 15. It's the current "bogeyman" because alleged terrorists flew planes into buildings. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
