What are the best surfing locations near Tamarindo in Costa Rica?

The beach break in front of Witch's Rock Surf Camp is great for learning surfers. The rivermouth out to the right is a great wave that has some good tube rides when the swell comes from the north and with offshore winds. There are multiple great waves in the area.

My Dad built a house in Playa Grande that he rents out as a vacation rental which is about 1 mile north of Tamarindo so we go surfing near there all of the time. We just got back from a great trip there in February 2009. I like to surf in Playa Grande at beach marker #25 in Playa Grande because it's usually good at the right tide and it is only about 100 yards from the house.

There are other spots we like that are about a 5 minute walk north or about a 3 minute walk south of beach marker #25 in Playa Grande. There are good spots all the way along that beach that stretches several miles. In Tamarindo there are a couple great spots but because they are infront of the bigger resorts and have a little bit of a reef we like to surf Playa Grande.

We sometimes drive 20 minutes south of Tamarindo to Avellanos and another good spot south of there is Playa Negra. The most famous places to surf there are Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point. Check out www.JimsBeachHouse.com and a new video at vimeo.Com/2560422 for a great place to stay with a private pool!
