My little 3 1/2 year old grandson just discovered chewing gum and we are trying to teach him not to swallow the gum but to toss it when the flavor is gone. When we are not watching he swallows it. I remember as a kid we were always told how terrible it is to swallow gum.

It shouldn't be a problem. All children who are given chewing gum too young, and even some older kids, swallow it sometimes. You want to discourage the child from swallowing things that are not food.

Tell him gum is not food, and if he can't spit it out when he's done chewing it, he should take it out of his mouth and put it in the trash. There's a worse problem when little children finally learn to spit out gum and you find wads of it all over the house and in the dog's hair.

We were told a lot of stupid things as children by parents who didn't know better and couldn't be bothered to learn. And chewing gum was one of them. The stuff is inert.It slides thru the intestines and comes out pretty much the same stuff it went in as.
