What are the options for self-publishing and the advantages and disadvantages of these?

The Amazon kindle is the best e-book reader on the market. With 8 weeks battery life, connection to Amazon Prime, and a capacity to hold over 100,000 books, you will be excited. Get it now!

I'm thinking of beginning my own publishing company to market my books, but I'm not sure what would be most beneficial or what I should take into account. Options I've considered are: Publish e-Books, and do so through Lulu or iUniverse, or a similar company; Publish through Lulu or some other site and sell the print version; Put my own name on a publishing company and either publish books Print On Demand or via some sort of e-Book software and sell them from my site or via Amazon, etc.Asked by happilycoupled 50 months ago Similar questions: options self publishing advantages disadvantages Arts > Books.

Any of those ways can work... As long as you realize--and it seems you do--that key to the whole operation is marketing. You should, of course, carefully compare the prices and services of both the e-book places and the POD places--that's an ever-changing industry. The more you can do well yourself, the better off you'll be, so getting some information about book design will be extraordinarily helpful (my spouse has a small press publishing company, and is his own book designer).(How you handle Customer service and shipping and handling are some other considerations with POD, by the way) Your topic matter and market should play a big part in determining whether you e-book or POD--as the older your clientele gets, the more apt they are to want a real honest-to-god solid book with a cover and pages in their hands.

Before you start, you should also be putting together lists of potential customers for your titles, so that when you actually have books ready to go, you have the avenue in place for getting sales together. The publishing indsutry is undergoing a massive transformation, and has been for the last 10 years or so. I know all the reasons that doing it yourself is attractive--I've got book contracts with 5 or 6 different companies (I've lost track, because they keep getting sold to each other), and I know WAY too much about where the money goes with those companies.

But the marketing is the ONE hardest thing to replace. They have their inhouse lists and systems, they have the bucks to get the materials out there--and doing it on your own is far from easy. So have your marketing plan WELL in hand--do it thoroughally--before you sink any $$$ into any of the ebook or POD options, because you'll rise or fall on that.

You're in control! Odd as it sounds, the main benefit and negative is the same, that you have total control, but you also have total responsibility for the product you put out. For many, that can be daunting.

Not all writers enjoy the marketing and business end of publishing that goes along with self-publishing and, quite frankly, for many, the hardest part isn't writing the book, it's creating the business and marketing plan that will help ensure that the work you create actually sells. Just putting something up on Lulu, for instance, doesn't mean customers will flock to it. Nor does self-publishing, ie setting up your own company and doing it all yourself, mean anyone will find your writing to read it, let alone buy it.

There's a world of info out there and I'd suggest you check out some Yahoo groups that deal with this field. Some of the best known in the self-publishing field and book marketing fields hang out on these lists and there's a wealth of knowledge to be found there that I can't even begin to touch on here in the few minutes I have to type: finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/pod_publi... Notice that this one stems from the finance field, one few writers are familiar with but if you don't have the financial chops, self-publishing can be a short-cut to poverty finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/Self-Publ... Whereas the first deals more with print on demand areas, this one is self-publishing and where you can get the answers to all your questions, ones you probably don't even know to ask right now. spannet.org/ This is the self-publishing world's trade organization.

Not free, but worth joining and info galore available. So, while I'm not necessarily giving you the short answer we all wish was available, hope this helps. I recently took the self-publishing route myself (after being published traditionally by others in various formats) and, quite frankly, have decided that I'll never, ever complain about editors and publisher demands again. I'm glad I did it, from the writing and typesetting and cover design and then the marketing and business plans and so much more that I can't even begin to list, but it isn't a simple avenue to automatic success. My first self-published book is doing well, largely cos I've worked my rear off to make sure it got out there, but also because I did the legwork and worked hard to ensure it was the best I could offer.

In the process, I researched and killed a forest printing out info, but I'm glad I did. I don't enjoy the biz aspects, but I now know I can do it all, plus what I want to farm out to others to do for me next time. Sources: personal experience .

Self-publishing a challenge due to publicity and editing I work as a freelance book editor for two different publishing houses. I’ve also edited books for two separate friends. One published his book of poetry with iUniverse (a very pleasant and successful experience) and the other used Lightning Source (a less-than-pleasant experience) to publish his book on CB radio repair.

If you’re using a print-on-demand service such as those above, make sure your price includes a professional edit. Too many mistakes can creep into a manuscript, which turns off prospective buyers and damages your reputation as a writer. Also, it’s imperative to assign an ISBN to your book, which allows it to be carried on the two major bookselling portals (bn.Com and amazon.

Com). Self-publishing usually fails financially because of poor self-promotion. You may have written one of the best books of the year, but if no one knows about it, who cares?

1 One of the most important things to remember about self-publishing is your reader. Your reader should be considered every step of the way of your marketing, promoting and distributing your book. In terms of publishing your ebook I think it is a great idea.

I've published five paperback books to date, some of which are available in ebook format. I think in the long run you'll come out better if you publish your ebook independently and merely make it available through as many different channels as possible. You can leave your digital footprint (buy now buttons) throughout the Internet creating a number of inbound links for all of your ebooks.

Initially, I'd considered using Lulu and iUniverse and decided that no matter which route I took I was going to have to work my tail off for my books to be a success, so I took the road less traveled, printed my own books and started selling them. Because of my books I've been able to leave my 9 to 5 job. More importantly the books have opened me up to a number of consulting opportunities, speaking engagements and so forth.
