I had to research it. I've always heard to put oil the water for pasta. I even add some olive oil to the boil of pasta after taking it out of the water and have it waiting for the sauce.It doesn't stick that way.
This site says that's a no no. It says you shouldn't even put oil in the water because it causes the sauce to roll off of it instead of sticking to it and giving it flavor. The salt in the water is to give the pasta flavor.

Carla, I try to be careful about how much salt I eat, too. I still put salt in pasta water. I figure that most of the salt will still be in the water and not in the pasta.
Salt in the water adds flavor to the pasta. I recently have had to cut back on my salt intake and the one place I couldn't cut back was not adding it to the pasta water. To me the pasta was bland and I did not care for it.
The only time I don't salt my water is if I'm making pasta salad;because I will be adding salt and other seasonings. Some people add oil to the water to keep pasta from sticking together, but you can avoid that by boiling your pasta in a large pan enough water and giving a few stirs during the cooking time. Also if you add oil your pasta will have a oily residue and the sauce will slide off.
T I believe that salted water is supposed to do a better job of boiling the pasta. I normally cook without salt, so I never use it for boiling pasta, and I'm still alive! And adding oil to the water (which I do) prevents the pasta from sticking together when it's taken out of the pot.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
