A larger intake from supplemental protein for example whey protein may force extra stress on the kidneys because kidneys aren't used to processing that sort of protein. Stress on the kidneys is not good but it can deal with it. There is no medical history of an athlete having kidney failure when using protein supplements the right way.
Just keep in mind when using protein supplements drink a lot of water and keep hydrated! Always use recommended amount.
