As far as tips on getting a long lasting tan, you are correct in that if you exfoliate or do a skin peel on your face your tan will be diminished. This is because that top surface layer of skin cells is removed - and that top layer is the one that has been tanned. Nowadays, there is no reason to go sit in the sun and bake to get a tan - that will just leave you very wrinkled before your time and you'll end up with skin like leather.
If you want to look younger as you age, using sun screen is your best defense. Use it every day - just purchase a moisturizer that has a sunscreen already in it. As far as getting the long lasting tan you desire, you are much better off using self tanning lotions.
