What are your favorite "doctored" recipes?

I don't know if anyone remembers these cookbooks that came out in the 90s. They had these recipes where you take something canned or frozen and add a few secret ingredients to make them unique. I think the original one was called the "Cake Mix Doctor" and it had all of these recipes that had boxed cake mix at the base.

What are your favorite quickie recipes that have prepackaged foods at the base? Asked by keobooks 18 months ago Similar questions: favorite doctored recipes Food & Drink > Recipes.

If you liked the Cake Mix Doctor then you will love the Dinner Doctor. Here are a few recipes from her book that I have had and enjoyed. For a quick and easy Red Clam Sauce, just take a jar of your favorite marinara sauce add a can of clams, a little white wine and some fresh chopped parsley.

Serve with a bagged salad and garlic bread for a romantic Italian Dinner. Here’s another clever and downright simple dish. The only trick is to find corn tortillas the same size as your glass pie pan.

And actually, that’s no trick either—you can always cut to fit. You can use a 10 or 9-inch pie pan. I discovered that substituting reduced-fat sour cream and fat-free refried beans does not reduce the flavor, so I’m all for using them.

Vegetable oil cooking spray for misting the skillet 1 pound ground beef 1 jar (12 ounces) chunky salsa 6 corn tortillas (10 inches each) 1 can (16 ounces) refried beans, fat free if possible 1 cup reduced-fat sour cream 1 package (8 ounces; 2 cups) pre-shredded Mexican-style four-cheese blend Chopped fresh tomato and chopped scallions, for garnish (optional) Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Mist a large skillet with vegetable oil cooking spray, and place over medium-high heat. Crumble in the ground beef and cook, stirring and breaking up the lumps with a wooden spoon, until the beef browns all over and is cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes.

Stir in 1?2 cup of the salsa. Set the beef mixture aside. Spread the remaining salsa in the bottom of a 10-inch glass pie pan.

Top it with 3 of the tortillas. Spread half of the beans over the tortillas, then half of the meat mixture, then 1?2 cup of the sour cream, then 1 cup of the cheese. Top with the remaining 3 tortillas and repeat the layers, ending with all but 1?4 cup of the remaining cheese.

Cover the pie pan loosely with aluminum foil. Bake the “lasagna” until it is hot throughout and the cheese has melted, 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the “lasagna” from the oven, let it rest for 5 minutes, then cut it into wedges or spoon servings onto plates, garnished with the remaining 1?4 cup cheese and the chopped tomato and scallions, if desired.

Another very popular dish is the Asian Chicken Salad 1 package (3 ounces) Oriental-flavor ramen noodle soup mix 1/2 cup pre-sliced almonds 3/4 cup bottled red wine vinaigrette 1 package (16 ounces) coleslaw or broccoli slaw mix 2 cups shredded cooked chicken 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves 2 scallions, white and green parts, chopped (for 1/4 cup) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Break up the ramen noodles with your hands and place them and the almonds on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake until the noodles and almonds turn light brown, 6 to 7 minutes.

Meanwhile, pour the red wine vinaigrette into a measuring cup and stir in the packet of seasoning from the ramen noodle soup mix. Set the salad dressing aside. Place the slaw mix, chicken, cilantro, and scallions in a large serving bowl.

Toss to combine the ingredients well. Just before serving, pour the salad dressing over the salad and toss to coat. Scatter the toasted almonds and noodles on top and serve..

2 Ah yes, I remember the "dump" cake. Canned fruit on the bottom, sprinkle cake mix and dot all over with butter! Haven't made one of those in ages now that it's just the two of us.

They were actually very good served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! I used to make a lot of casseroles with mushroom soup, frozen peas and canned tuna or chicken and noodles. Everybody loved them.

3 The majority of my recipes are like that. I'm lazy. Although to take lazy to new extremes, whenever there's a potluck at work, I'll buy prepackaged hummus and add a few things (basil, maybe some tomatoes or something), scoop it into a tupperware, and conveniently forget to tell people I didn't make it from scratch.

I've lost count of how many people have asked me for the recipe. :-) .

4 I don't really "do" all that much pre-processed food. However, I do use things like canned soup as an ingredient. One of my favorite super easy and delicious sauces that works with Pork chops, Chicken breast, or even quail and/or dove:1 can cream of mushroom soup.1 can of french onion soup.

Pour both cans into a casserole dish and lightly stir together. Put the protein in the mix and make sure it is covered. Bake until the meat is done.

This also converts to one of those super easy dutch oven camp out recipes that will impress the hell out of your hunting buddies. The next time you go dove hunting, that evening clean your harvest and remove the breast pieces from the bone and throw into a small dutch oven with the couple of cans of soup you had stashed in the truck. Slap a few coals on the top (not too many!) and a couple on the bottom of the oven.

Rotate a quarter of a turn every few minutes to ensure even cooking. When things look about done, whip out one of those pre-packaged Caesar salads and mix it right in the bag. It's super easy and your hunting buddies will think you are a culinary genius. I guarantee they will invite you back!
