Whenever I hear West End Girls, I'm transformed back to the 80's again. I would have to agree with you Ed that their new stuff is kinda 'blah'. As long as they realize that they will always be known as that 80's pop and techno band, they should be fine.
I think they now know they cannot remove their old material completely from concerts because that is what most of the people come for. I liked their debut album Please, but I also liked the songs on Actually too.
I'm also a fan of the early Pet Shop Boys back in the late 80's. The group was innovative both in their music and in their videos. Even though West End Girls is mostly spoken, I still like the beat.
I think their remix/cover of Willie Nelson's Always on My Mind is one of the best covers of all time. They took a slow song and transformed it into one with a catchy and fast beat. They also did a great job collaborating with the great Dusty Springfield on What Have I Done to Deserve This.
But my favorite song and video is It's a Sin, which I even like to sing at karaoke. The music is catchy and even the lyrics mean a lot to me, about how it seems that everything I do in life is considered wrong.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
