What are your reactions and thoughts of the USA vs Canada ice hockey game at the Winter Olympics tonight and the USA Team's 5-3 win?

I think the comparison is reasonable valid in a couple of ways, but missing several MAJOR pieces. It is similar because it was a great upset – the overmatched US team fighting against the heavy favorite. It was also similar because it was a great game.

I didn’t catch the whole thing (thanks NBC for shuffling it off onto MSNBC), but from what I saw it was a fantastic game. But in my opinion, comparing this game to the “Miracle on Ice” is just typical current-day hyperbole – we can’t just watch a GREAT game anymore, it has to be compared with the best. Sorry, it’s just not the same.

Here’s a few reasons why: 1. The “Miracle on Ice” was in the medal round, so the game was just more significant. Even though the tournament was round robin and not single-elimination, the point in the tournament made it more a more significant loss.

Sure, there are a bunch of irate Canadians today, but Canada still can win gold by winning their remaining games. The USSR needed the US to lose against Finland in 1980 to claim the gold. 2.In 1980, the USSR was a far bigger favorite than Canada is today.

This Canadian team is loaded with talent, but the Soviets had won every gold medal (save one) from 1956 to 1980. They were truly dominant.3. The Cold War element of the game created a much greater rivalry between the two teams (or at least a greater animosity for the opponent).

Many Americans who follow NHL hockey may have several of their NHL teams’ players on the Canadian Olympic team. Few Americans would cheer AGAINST this Canadian team against a non-US opponent. That wasn’t the case in 1980.

4. In 1980, the “home team” was the underdog US team that won. Here the “home team” actually lost.

Part of what made the 1980 game amazing was that the crowd sensed they were watching “their team” do something special and the crowd countdown at the end served as the perfect backdrop for Al Michael’s famous call: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGACsSW4Iqw.

According to a post by ALAN ROBINSON of huffingtonpost. Com, he said that "And they pulled off the biggest Olympic hockey upset since the Miracle on Ice, stunning Canada 5-3 on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of an already mixed-up tournament. " Furthermore, he concluded that "And the Miracle on Ice team?

There's links to this team: Ryan Suter, who had two assists, is the son of 1980 defenseman Bob Suter. And defenseman Brooks Orpik, steady throughout, is named for Herb Brooks, the 1980 coach.

Considering this was a preliminary game and not even an elimination game this is far from a "miracle on ice" What it really came down to was Ryan Miller outplaying Martin Brodeur, Miller was peppered with well over 40 shots and the three he let in were good goals. The only real miracle here was that Brodeur let in 5 goals - 3 of them were directly his fault. I wouldn't put too much stock into this game, the important games start today.

While watching the game, which was a very exciting game, I naturally was pulling for the United States, since I live in Ohio. There were times that it seemed Canada had about 10 players on the ice. They were all over Team USA.

Canada was playing a more aggressive game than the US team. There were 7 penalties in the game, 4 of which were assessed to Canada. Of the 3 US penalties, 1 came early in the first period, and the other two came when the 3rd period was half over, and they had a 4-2 lead.

All of the players on both teams were from the NHL so I don't think that it can be compared to the "Miracle on Ice" game. Besides all of the great stats that @mrcal cited, the 1980 US team were amateurs (NHL players were ineligible to play). But beating Canada at their house, and at their game was quite a victory.

Hopefully these Olympic games will encourage Americans to watch more NHL hockey games. Hopefully they'll recognize what a fast-paced, precise, and physically demanding sport that it is.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
