Campus security I wish it were as easy as that, to tighten up the security. But, I’m afraid, if someone is as screwed up as to do a heinous act like this, they will find a way around whatever you set up as "security". It’s not a logical crime, so no amount of logic can help prevent it.It’s more related to the treatment of mental illness than criminality, I believe.

I haven’t heard yet if they have determined the shooter’s reasoning on this terrible, terrible incident, but I would guess that it’s similar to those in the past. I'm sure that they initial reaction at colleges and universities will be to tighten security, as the local schools do after incidents. But college campuses are like a mini community, with many buildings with many doors and windows, and complete security would almost be impossible, unless we want our children to go to school in a prison.

We can only do the best we know how, and hope for help for those people who might choose to act upon their mental imbalance this way BEFORE they get to this point. Training kids more to recognize a peer that needs help might help. The information obtained after these events usually say that the shooters do tell people their plans quite often.

But people don't take them seriously, or don't understand them. *Poppet*'s Recommendations Give a Boy a Gun Amazon List Price: $5.99 Used from: $2.50 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5 (based on 121 reviews) .

There really is no realistic way to fortify a campus If every campus is on a war footing all the time not much education is going to get done. How could campus police stop something like this? A suicidal killer motivated to take as many people with him as possible.

There is only one possible defense and it will never be employed because it too politically incorrect. Virginia issues licenses to it's non-criminal citizens for concealed weapon carry but faculty and students who possess such a license are not allowed to carry or possess weapons on the Virginia Tech campus. Thus, unlike at the mall, the killer can rest assured that absolutely everyone there will be defenseless... A similar killler at a law school was shot by one of the law students who was lawfully armed a couple of years ago.

Who knows how many he saved? Too radical? Then we just have to live with it..

1 I live about 90 minutes from there. Also, I have taught many, many kids who attend VaTech now. Right now, I'm too horrified to have any rational opinions.

Also, this sounds incredibly selfish since so many innocent lives were lost, but I need (emotionally) to know if anyone I know is a victim. It's somehow worse if I know any of them (or the killer)--is that cold, or what . ..?Back to the TV news-- .

2 Poppet, regarding your answer "campus security": Several problems with the mental health approach:1. People have so many civil rights now they cannot be hospitalized against their will (in Pennsylvania, anyway) unless they make very specific threats or "commit an act in furtherance of violence". This enables us to lock the barn door after the horse is long gone.2.

Psychiatrists are notoriously unsuccessful at figuring out which of the many who threaten violence will actually do it, if allowed the chance.3. For psychopatic killers there is, sadly, no successful treatment available even if we could get them to agree to undergo it.4. Kids don't rat out somebody who makes extravagant threats-it's goth cool to do so.

3 yes, I realize all that, Ed, which is why its pretty much impossible to do anything to prevent tragedies like this. All we can do is hope it doesn't affect someone near and dear to us....it's a scary world out there....

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
