Ethical conduct is a product of an ethical culture and work environment. If the culture of an organization is not ethical, it is hard to change this although it is possible. A few things can be done to encourage ethical conduct.
Step 1. The organization needs to set clear policies and codes regarding ethical conduct. This needs to be understandable and possible to follow.
Step 2. Employees need training and support regarding the code of ethics to ensure they understand what is expected, see that the organization is serious about these guidelines, and have the ability to ask questions or seek assistance when faced with a challenging situation that could be ethically compromising. Step 3.
Recognize that not every employee is ethical nor wants to be ethical. After training and support is provided, unethical conduct needs to be addressed through disciplinary action. It is hoped by engaging in the disciplinary process after training and support has already been provided that the employee will understand that ethics demands more of their attention and that noncompliant behavior will not be tolerated.
Step 4. Training and enforcing realistic policies is the most effective way to develop an ethical culture in the workplace. That being said, some employees may choose not to change their behavior despite training, support, and disciplinary action. It is at this time that it is important for the organization to terminate employment with this employee.
Having this employee around others is damaging and sends the message that it is ok not to follow the codes of ethics. Step 5. Additional training and support should be provided whenever an employee leaves the organization due to unethical behavior.
This accomplishes two things. One employee's behavior could be reflective of others that have not come to your attention yet. Reinforcing the rules and the purpose of the code of ethics may remind employees to rethink their behavior.
This also creates a more positive and supportive environment for employees which is important after they see a coworker leave and fear their own jobs. This training empowers them and allows them to understand that by simply remaining ethical and seeking support when needed, they can avoid the fate of their former coworker.
