That's a good question.. I used to give to 7 or 8 charities every year especially around the holidays. This year, I am only giving to one: The Foundation Fighting Blindness. My daughter has macular degeneration and is only 46 years old so I will be giving with her in mind.
But, I am impressed by the professionalism of FFB. They do not hound you for money the way so many others do. They do groundbreaking research and publicize the results.
My daughter attended a FFB Convention a few months ago and came back with the knowledge of many useful computerized magnifiers to increase her productivity at her job as a copywriter. She will be getting one of these from her parents for Christmas and a donation in her name to FFB.

When they take the "tax hit" and look for ways to recover cutting charitable giving will be one of the first things to go. It will then be more important than ever for the working class to step up to the plate and cover for those cut backs. 2 I know what you mean about The American Red Cross... I don't think any one can forget how they tried to keep the money donated to victims of 911 through them. They were trusted by millions of Americans to be a collection point for 911 charity and they fudged on the deal and had to be forced by a judge to pay out. If I were them I would change my name... that isn't something easily recovered from.
They do some good work though and so that is doubly sad.
