If you are reading to kids I wouldnt worry too much if your english is spot on or not. Kids usually don't care. You may want to concentrate on how to pronounce certain words.
Get approximate intonation or it will sound like "katakana eigo". Some advice for reading to kids. Use expression in your voice.
Do "voices". Involve kids by asking them questions about what they see in picture. Colors.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
