You should not feel less of an American to think of apologizing to the Japanese’s In war time all countries have to do something and although that something may be devastating, if it can save lives on both sides and stop the war like “doug v” stated, then it was well worth it You got to realize that the worrier tradition of Japan is to die with honor, and with that tradition you know darn well they would not have surrendered even if they only had 20 soldiers left to lose the war! I believe that it was for the best, because it showed us what devastation can occur with such bombs and because of the atomic bombs we now have a national law against those weapons of mass destruction! As a soldier in the pacific war stated in one of the shows I seen in the past, “I have nothing against the Japanese people and now that the war is over I respect them no less and no more we are all worriers whether we won or not!
I don't think any feeling you have about Japan will make you less American. With all the "answers" you got none (as I'm typing this) actually answered your question (other than "no"). I firmly believe NO apology on ANYONE's part makes them LESS of ANYTHING.
Everyone else here wants an apology from someone else for something else. What the U.S. did to non-combatant citizens of two Japanese cities was unspeakable. At the same time it saved at least as many lives (on both sides) as it took.
Japan was warned, and ignored it. And they did start things w/Pearl Harbor. By the same token, there is strong evidence that the U.S. HAD advance warnings of that attack which were ignored to overcome the Isolationism which had kept us out of the war up to that point despite MANY pleadings from our allies.
But just as I truly believe "All Forgiveness Is A Gift to Yourself" I believe All Apologies, required or not, if heartfelt, are also a gift to both parties. So do what you need to do to feel better about things, and ignore all the hatefulness coming from those who think you should suffer. Hope this helps... Good luck!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
