Dreams are complex... but usually the release of stress/anxiety and unwanted stuff from your every day life's activities. The brain is a very complex organ and is the most complex thing on the planet. It has enormous storage capacity and we never use all of it even at the end of our lives.
Dreaming is the flittering off of excess memories/thoughts/feelings/anxieties/happenings/events that you have experiences. If you experience alarming dreams it may relate to your waking life. You must look at your life and assess if you feel safe, are your children under any threat, are you stable at present and most importantly what was your childhood like?
Childhood memories can resurface late in life especially if you had traumatic events. Everything you are conscious off in life is recorded in the brain. It is a massive VCR!
So, look at your life and see if anything is bothering you, are you upset, are you under any threat or unhappy. Your dreams may relate to some past event or present situation that is unresolved. Look at your life.

Maybe, Maybe not I've put a lot of thought into dreams, and what exactly they mean, and I'm still not decided entirely. I've had dreams that have come to fruition, and others that were just strange. I dreamt once that my mother and her friend were taking a trip in a silver SUV and got into an accident on the mountain pass.
They nearly rented the silver vehicle, until I told them about my dream. Both of them are strong believers in the fact that the subconcious knows far more than our waking mind, and they rented another vehicle instead. While on the pass a truck coming the wrong way came within an inch of hitting the car they were in but they swerved in time, and instead the truck hit the car behind them, and the car behind it crashed as well.4 people died in that accident, and I believe that had they rented the silver SUV my mother and her friend would have been among them.
However, death in a dream does not always mean actual death. Sometimes the subconcious doesn't know how to communicate things to us in a way that our rational mind can understand, and this can cause fright, or those dreams that you wake up from wondering what the heck happened. Death in your dream may simply be a change coming for your children, for example if they are near the age of puberty the end of childhood or death, and the arrival into adolescence.
You shouldn't panic about the dream, but don't simply write it off. If you can remember certain details, just tell your children to avoid them. It will make you feel better to know you did something to prevent potential problems.
You may also want to check a bookstore or your library for a book on dream interpretation, (there are a great many out there) and keep a dream journal. Sometimes its a surprise to discover what our brain is trying to tell us..
1 At times one's dreams can be the subconsciousness working out of unfinished thoughts from our waking state especially so if one is troubled. Only you can judge what is uppermost in your mind that needs to be resolved. Also, when the conscious mind is quietened you can be tuning in to other's thoughts.
Premonitions can and do happen, one has only to read about the subject. You might be interested in this site on the subject of dreams, and I'm sure there must be many more:spiritualforums.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?... .

TurboB replied to post #1: 2 Dreams are not omens. They are a combination of TV shows, memories of things past in your life, things you hear and see, manifestations of your inner fears, etc. You cannot pick up others thoughts, and your dreams are not premonitions of things to come. I understand that this dream was extremely upsetting , but it does NOT mean that these events are going to happen.
It simply means that in your mind it is one of your fears. Totally understandable.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
