The end of the world, in terms of sales of new agey books It’s not really a "prophecy", per se, but the Mayan long count calendar turns over on December 21. It’s a kind of Y2K event, without the computers to actually notice it, but it’s on a very long calendar whose start date was back in 3114 BC, which makes it seem more significant. It hasn’t actually been in use that long.
The earliest references are around 36 BC, though it may be a thousand years older. The origin date is back-dated, much as the Jewish calendar is, backtracking from the 2012 date because they thought that was when a particular astronomical event was going to happen (an alignment of the earth’s ecliptic plane with the galactic plane). The Mayan astronomers were accurate, but not that accurate, and the "alignment" they were talking about actually occurred several years ago with no ill effects.
But since the date is also 12/21/12, a nicely prophetic looking number, it gets lots of extra attention. Never mind that this is on a rather arbitrary calendar, which had to be jiggered a few centuries ago by eliminating 10 days because it had become out of synch with the seasons. You can go ahead and read plenty more about it.
The book below is one of the biggies of the field, though drop by the New Agey section of the bookstore and you’ll find plenty of people making pronouncements of The End Of The World in various forms. They all make different predictions, including some sort of great awakening of humanity to realize the full potential of the blah blah blah blah blah Sources: giagia.co.uk/?p=249 PamPerdue's Recommendations 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl Amazon List Price: $26.95 Used from: $5.40 Average Customer Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (based on 101 reviews) .
2011 There is some growing attention to the claims that Christ is returning in 2011 and therefore the world is ending as we know it. It appears to Harold Camping, based on his calculations, that the Church Age has ended in 1988 and we are now in the Great Tribulation, and further calculations shows that Christ should arrive in 2011. But be aware that Camping's first attempt at prophesying Christ's return was scheduled for 1994.
When that didn't happen, Camping did recalculations, and now believes the year to be 2011. Of course his credibility at prophetic statements is very much suspect after his 1994 goof. But undeterred, Camping has written another book detailing his case for 2011.
Who is Harold Camping? He has been around radio for at least 40 years conducting Bible studies. Camping believes that his mission is to spread the Word through radio.
Camping owns several radio stations that come under the umbrella name of Family Radio out of Oakland Calif. Camping has lost a lot of credibility among Christian leaders for his "end times" teachings. Camping has a great deal of Biblical knowledge and for the most part is accurate in his teachings, but for the biblically unaware can be led astray with some less than accurate theology.
I have not read his book, nor do I plan to. I do not recommend this book for the truth of the matter but no more than topical interest.
