The Generic! Artemis virus does the following: 1) constantly opens new Websites, such as PCSecurity Shield and The Shield Deluxe 2009; 2) puts icons on my desktop for the PCSecurity Shield; 3) disabled my CD drive; 4) slows computer; 5) prevents you from deleting empty folders, and; 6) prevents you from formatting my C: drive.

When McAfee pulled it out, it called it the "Artemis! CD 34567...."(a bunch of numbers) It never said anything about "Generic", like many I have read about. Sounds like it does have the ability to corrupt registry files and make opening existing programs impossible.

You need to get rid of it, no matter what it is called. It sounds like one of those viruses put out by a virus protection comapny,- giving you a virus and then trying to force you to buy their service to get rid of it. I had one of those one.

Really nasty. I used malwarebytes free service to get rid of it.

McAfee has it listed as a false positive, so apparently it isn't too bad. According to the discussion linked below you can get rid of it by running Dr.WebCureIt, which I haven't used but seems to be a legit tool. This is the correct link for Dr. Web -- the one in the article doesn't work.

Maybe it's a different virus than the one I was reading about. I can't answer the question about the registry files. Are you still having problems after McAfee removed it?
