ODST stands for Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. The term was first popularized by the game Halo 3: ODST, which was developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was released exclusively for the Xbox 360 in September 2009.
ODSTs, also known in-game as Helljumpers, are human troops deployed in one-man Human Entry Vehicles which are dropped from a planet's upper atmosphere onto the battlefield. In the game, the player takes control of one of an unnamed ODST, a departure from past Halo games where one played as Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, a cybernetically enhanced space Marine and the main protagonist of the Halo trilogy.
