In an interview, Win Butler, said that before they began writing for the album, he had gotten a letter from an old friend from his home town, Houston Texas. In the letter there was a picture of his friend near the mall Win and his friends hung out often as kids. He said that it brought back memories and was inspired to write an album about childhood and the pureness of being a kid.
The song "The Suburbs" sort of sums up the whole concept of the album. Growing up in the suburbs.

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
