What does Zip in Zip Code Mean?

ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan. It identifies community post offices or delivery stations. The first number determines the region.

The second and third numbers designate the centers. The last two digits are the old zone number from before 1963 when two numbers were used. In 1983 the ZIP code was expanded to add a + and 4 other numbers to be even more specific.

Zip code means the specific area of a community. It pin points the exact location within so many blocks. This is anywhere in the country.
