I need to make a recipe in a jar, to be stored on a shelf. And I can't use ingredients in liquid form or 'wet' base. Asked by mommychef 21 months ago Similar questions: dry ingredients substitute shortening Food & Drink > Cooking.

Not sure what you are making, but..... I have two cookie recipes that I make for friends during the holidays. I add solid shortening to the mix. Just know that the mix must be used within a few months.
The first is an oatmeal cookie recipe that is loaded with extras. 6 cups rolled oats 4 cups all purpose flour 3 cups packed brown sugar 2 tespoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 pound shortening 2 cups raisins 1 1/2 cups shredded coconut 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 1 cup chopped pecans In a large bowl combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda and salt. With a pastry blender cut in shortening until crumbly.
Stir in raisins, coconut, chocolate chips and pecans. Store in an airtight container for up to 10 weeks. Attach a tag that reads: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Grease a baking sheet, or line with parchment paper. Measure 4 cups of the mix into a large bowl. Whisk together 1 egg, 2 tablespoons milk and 2 teaspoons vanilla; stir into the mix.
Roll into 1 1/2 inch balls and place on prepared baking sheet. Flatten with a fork dipped in sugar. Bake in preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until golden.
Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. Then we have a gingerbread cookie recipe that makes a great gift at Christmas. 8 C.
Flour 2 C. Sugar 1/4 C. Baking powder 1 T.
Salt 1 t. Baking soda 1 t. Ground cloves 1 t.
Ginger 1 T. Cinnamon 2 C. Shortening Sift dry ingredients together.
Cut shortening in with a pastry cutter. Measure 3 Cups of mix into 4 jars. Attach a gift card with the following instructions: Gingerbread Cookies Add: 1/3 C.
Molasses 1/4 C. Flour 1 slightly beaten egg Combine gingerbread mix, molasses, egg and flour. Blend well.
Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut into gingerbread shapes. Bake at 350°F.
For 10 minutes. Cool and decorate. Use mix within 3 months When you tie the bow on this one, attach a gingerbread cookie cutter.

You can purchase dry shortening from Emergency Essentials. It last forever.
My wife has given those away as Christmas gifts in the past, and recipe is on the lid: shortening is added. But one can include things such as chocolate, which includes an amount of oil or shortening.
1 I think what you can do is store the ingredients in a jar, and when you're ready to make the recipe, you then add shortening, butter, fan or olive oil to it at that time. There's no "dry" substitute for shortening. The shortening tends to make things moist.
