Wegener noticed (in the Atlantic in his case) (1) Some continents seemed to "fit together" very well (2) Rock sequences could be found identically on either side of the ocean (3) Fossil distribution was identical in certain places (4) Animals that were not exactly the same, but similar could be found on both continents Theory, the continents had at one time in the past been together, then they had split and moved apart. The problem with his theory was that he had no concept of tectonic plates (no one did), and while the evidence was pretty good, no one, including him, could come up with a good reason for a solid continent to break up, then for two continents of solid rock to just plow their way through equally solid oceanic rock. Yeah.
So unfortunately, his career ended in mild disgrace with a lot of people laughing at him. The short form of the end of the story is that both the US Navy and the Nazi Kriegsmarine (navy) spent years before World War II and year during the conflict ... more.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
