Well you could use a calculator, but if you want to work it out manually you could take 10% of the number and divide it by 2. 10% is an easy number to use because you just drop a digit.

Think of 5% of $1.00, which is a nickel, or 1/20th. And 5% of anything will always be 1/20th of that anything. So simply knock a zero off the right end your large number; that's just like dividing by ten.

Then split the remaining number in half, and that's 1/20th — your answer.
