Picasa 3 by Google Would be my first choice. Although, it doesn't have any real detail editing. I use it for quick/ general fixes.
I actually prefer the online free editing sites for detail fixes. Like Picnik, the editor in Photobucket and Lunapic. If you go to CNet.com and search 'free image editing downloads', you can have your pick of the litter.
They will display dozens of good options for you to choose from, with ratings. They are a trustworthy site. You know, photoshop.com aslo offers a free to use on-line editor, can't go wrong there.
Good Luck. Sources: web trial and error .
I love Picasa by Google I like Picasa, as it meets my needs. It is free, which is also great. Picasa indexes your image files, so you can scroll down through thumbnails, vs. having to open separate files.
This is a real time saver. I can crop, adjust dimensional size and color temperature, also can export and downsize at the same time. I shoot the photos at high pixel size without concern about lowering them for use in various Internet projects.
This software also has features to create collages and slideshows. For the few simple things I need, this works great.
2 So many good and free image editing software out there. Here are just a few:1. The Gimp2.Paint.

3 The one I hear people talk about all the time is Gimp... but I personally loved that I took the time and the patience to learn PhotoShop. The benefits are staggering on the control you have on everything....

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
