What is a Peroxisome?

Peroxisomes are organelles present in almost all eukaryotic cells that participate in the metabolism of fatty acids and other metabolites. They also hold enzymes that help rid the cells of toxic peroxides.

A peroxisome is a bag of antioxidant enzymes; much of the oxygen stress that peroxisomes "rid the cell of" is actually created in peroxisomes by oxidases.
