The taper is a period just prior to a race that consists of a reduced training load so as to allow the body to recover from the recent hard training weeks and prepare it for race day. There are many different theories about tapering; some people taper for several weeks, and others just for a few days. The length of the taper typically matches the duration of the race, so for Ironman racing, the taper period can be anywhere from two to four weeks.
