Android is a mobile phone operating system released by Google. It is open source and seems to be free for manufacturers to distribute. It is intended for use in smart phones.
Some prominent phones running the Android OS are the motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Pr... Motorola Droid, the google.com/phone Google Nexus One (htc.com/www/product/nexusone/overview.html built by HTC), the lg.com/us/mobile-phones/LG-VS740.jsp LG Ally, and the http://www.htc.com/www/product/hero/overview.html HTC Hero. In the open market, Android competes with several strong smart phone OSs including Apple's http://www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os/ iPhone OS, Palm's http://www.palm.com/us/ smartphone OS, Microsoft's http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/default.mspx Windows Mobile, and blackberry's http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/features/ smartphone OS. However, only Android and Windows Mobile can be licensed by various manufacturers.
The iPhone OS, Palm OS, and Blackberry OS are all heavily restricted. In my experience, most smaller handset phones tend to use motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Pr...0 Brew, a heavily restricted and controlled cell phone OS.
