Fear and avoidance of back pain is a learned behavior, and people with chronic back pain form many of their perceptions and expectations from knowing or hearing of other people who developed chronic pain in similar situations. These culturally learned responses explain why so many people see their own predicament in a fearful and apprehensive light. Fear-avoidant patients tend to seek treatment from multiple medical specialists, and because physical signs aren't always apparent, a doctor's casual dismissal of their pain will only reinforce their already detrimental fear and avoidance behavior.
