What is Integrative Psychotherapy?

Integrative Psychotherapy is an outgrowth of Eclectic Psychotherapy. Eclectic therapy simply means a collection of various psychological theories and techniques within one treatment approach. Specific techniques can be prescribed or matched to specific client needs/problems, specific situations, and prevailing attitudes/preferences that the client may have.

Eclectic therapists pay little attention to which theory the technique came from; rather, the focus is on what works for this particular individual, with this particular problem, at this particular time. Integrative Psychotherapy (IP) is far more than a simple collection of techniques. IP attempts to combine or synthesize various elements of several therapies into a singular, unitary approach having its own logic and rationale.

Because of this, integrative psychotherapist can work with clients on many different levels, often at the same time (i.e. , behavioral, cognitive (thinking), affect (emotions), social relationships, ...
