Zone Alarm Pro or Webroot Vista is more secure than MS’s previous OSs, but you still need something. Two that I can recommend are Zone Alarm Pro and Webroot Spy Sweeper with Antivirus. I use Zone Alarm on my home PCs, which are a mix of 2K and XP, and Webroot on my laptop, which is XP Pro.

Both applications are compatible with Vista. Zone Alarm can be a little annoying. It alerts you about every application that tries to go on line or change a setting, but this is precisely the kind of thing that you need to watch out for when you get a nasty.

This happens a lot after you first install it, but it settles down as it learns. Webroot is quieter when it works, but it has a nasty habit of popping up to nag you about running a scan every week. I would thus rate Zone Alarm as being the better of the two for protecting the system, but Webroot is easier to use and still provides good protection.

Nevertheless, both of these programs are less obtrusive than the ones I have seen from Norton and McAfee, the industry leaders, and their real-time monitoring features consume less of your computer’s power. All antivirus and antimalware programs that I know about will try to go on line to update themselves as soon as your computer boots up. This can be pretty aggravating when you just want to get to URL1 matter what you end up with, disable automatic updates - but don’t forget to update your definitions frequently.
