Anything goes - orchestra, rock band, singer, or school performance... Asked by VitruvianMe 48 months ago Similar questions: concert attended Entertainment > Music.
A concert in New Zealand where the conductor dislocated his shoulder. You have to be very careful with live music in New Zealand (I spent 15+ years commuting there). Repertoire and performance can be very variable.
However, one evening they were doing two of my absolute favourites: Brahms's Alto Rhapsody and German Requiem, with a guest conductor. I took my best friend, who didn't know either piece ... anyway, they were doing very well indeed with the Alto Rhapsody when suddenly the conductor left the podium, leaving the orchestra/chorus/soloist to finish my themselves (which they did, well). Anyway, the tea-break was extra long and full of puzzlement.
Then it was announced that the poor conductor had dislocated his shoulder, but that one Brian Godfrey was in the audience and had come forward to volunteer to conduct the Requiem. Brian Godfrey is easily NZ's finest choral conductor, but he had brought with him neither score nor reading glasses - so he would be working from memory. The first thing the poor man did was to side-swipe to conductor's podium (no glasses) cutting himself badly and spraying the first celli with gore; but it was easily the finest performance of the German Requiem I've heard, live or on record.NZ audiences are noted for their lack of responsiveness, but this time they all got a well-deserved standing ovation.
Of all the concerts I've seen - several hundred - the best was Sha Na Na That's not to take anything away from some of the other concerts I've seen that were also great (Short listing follows): Jefferson Airplane; Frankie Valli and the original Four Seasons; Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young; Harry Chapin; Three Dog Night; The Moody Blues; Jerry Lee Lewis; The Beach Boys; and on and on and on, Sha Na Na were still the best. What is ironic is that the Absolute Worst in-person performance I ever saw was their opening act - and I loved this group - Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show - they were absolutely horrible! At least when I play their music, I don't have to look at them!
So, why was Sha Na Na (and remember, they made their first appearance at Woodstock in 1969) so great? Ok, have to put this in perspective: it was at the Mississippi River Festival in Edwardsville, Illinois - just across from St. Louis and it was 1977. The group had their own syndicated television show and I'm sure that helped.
Add to that, the group was one which paid a respectful salute to the music of the 1950's. It was basically a modified form of rock theatre with a set resembling the streets of New York and that provided the proper setting since so much of the doo-wop music of the late '50's, early '60's originated with street corner groups, primarily in major cities such as New York. And the group was tight that night - really tight - not a missed cue, not a sour note, not a misstep, you name it, everything was just perfect. It was one of those concerts which you wish someone had filmed (no camcorders in those days) because the music was great and you would love to have it on tape or dvd so you could watch it again and again.
And, of course, there was - at the end - the usual standing ovation and encore....only this time, it wasn't just one encore - I honestly can't remember, but the excitement the group generated - well, we just wouldn't let them go! Where most encores last maybe one or two songs which isn't all that long, this one lasted a good half an hour.It was definitely a great concert and high-water mark of all the concerts I've ever seen. Sadly, the original group is no longer together although their is a version of Sha Na Na still touring, and at least one of the original members has died, but even if the surviving members were to get back together, there's no way they could ever duplicate the excitement of that Summer evening some 30 years ago.

I can think of three The first was the Beatles in Boston in 1964. It was just such a thrilling experience at the time and even now looking back the 40+ years. Tickets were impossible to get (we won ours from a radio station), and getting to go as well as the concert itself were just unbelievable experiences for a pre-teen (which I was).
I’m having a hard time coming up with adjectives that adequately express how special the experience was. And of course now that their place in music history has been solidified, it has to be one of the all-time greatest concert experiences ever. The second one I would nominate would be the Rolling Stones in Toronto in 2005.
They were a band I’d always wanted to see but could never get tickets before they sold out. These tickets were a birthday gift from my daughter, which made the concert doubly special. She, my husband, and I went and had a rockin’ good time.
From Start Me Up to It’s Only Rock and Roll (the encore), we were dancing in the aisles. What I didn’t know is that evidently it’s a common practice at Stones concerts for the women to pull up their shirts and expose themselves. Needless to say, I refrained. My husband swears he didn't see any... The last one I’d mention is a little different.
I'd consider it a concert because the main focus is singing carols. A church in our area does a Boar’s Head Festival as close as possible to January 6 (twelfth day of Christmas, Three Kings Day). The story of the visitors to the nativity is acted out, including all the animals.
There are actual sheep, goats, camels, falcons, and other near-wild animals brought into the church, as well as people playing the human parts dressed in biblical costumes. There is very little dialog, but the congregation sings the traditional carols accompanied by an authentic pipe organ. It is an incredibly moving experience. The first time I participated tears streamed down my face the entire night.

Gaelic storm! Gaelic storm is the band you can hear in the movie motion picture titanic. They are a great band of gaelic music and they are so funny.
I was a bit appalled that a couple of the members were so obviously 'glazed'. There music is original and I like it a lot. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
