Best place: local trusted coin shot, Worst place: online, especially Ebay I have found the absolute worst place is Ebay. This is because there are so many fraud dealers out there you can never trust what you are getting. Too many fraud dealers spoil the rest of the trust for what might be okay dealers online.

It depends on your experience and your goals. In general, don't buy from anyone that solicits you, such as Littleton Coins. Their prices are way too high.

If your goal is to have the coins increase in value, eBay is the easiest and best way to get a good deal. When buying from eBay, only buy third-party graded coins in sealed containers. PCGS and NGC are the two most reputable graders.

If the coin was graded by another company, I would usually dicount the price by one grade. If your goal is to give interesting coins as gifts, buy them directly from the U.S. Mint. A coin shop near you is a good place to get started and see the wide variety of coins available.

You might like to buy some coins there, but these little coin shops don't always have the best prices, expecially if they are near a tourist area. Wherever you buy them, buy a price guide first. This will give you a general idea of what a coin should cost.

Anyway, most of the coins I've bought locally have at least doubled in value since I bought them.

Www.ebay. Com is also great because there literally are thousands and thousands of coins for sale on there.It gives you a good idea of what value coins really have. You should always check on ebay before ordering from a catalog (Franklin Mint) or a large coin company (Littleton Coin Company).

A lot of the advice above is good. I would add that EBAY can be far and away the best place to buy coins, you just have to put some thought into it. If you use ebay in general and are familiar with it, it should not pose a major problem.

Only buy from those with excellent and perfect if possible feedback, with a long history and thousands of listings. Also make sure that they explicitly offer a free return policy and as always on EBAY make sure the shipping costs are reasonable. Most of these respectable ebay dealers have a store site on ebay.

Also you should be able to communicate with them directly through email, on ebay or by phone if you want. Many of them also maintin their own individual site, which can give you more security and may be even more competitive than ebay. The advantage of purchasing coins on line is obviously convenience, but also cost and the competitive nature of the comparison shopping gives you better deals.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
