When I read your question... it brought back some memories. When I was a wee tot, our Dad would make me, my brother and sister play "The Human Vacuum" game. Our upright was such a crappy model that it wouldn't pick up big items, so we would all crawl around picking up the big pieces (rubber bands, sticks and other things) that would easily break the fan belt of this archaic contraption.
When I grew up and had quite a bit of cleaning experience under my belt, I was drawn more to the canister style of vacuum. I've always lived in houses that had both hard wood floors and carpets. I also found with a canister that you had longer hose length that could get those pesky cob webs up high and narrow areas.(I grew up in a Victorian that had high ceilings) In getting an upright, it would be a deal breaker if the extension hose was too short.
I've had uprights that I wanted to throw out the window because without that hose length, you're pretty limited. Also, with uprights I find it irritating to go back and forth between the attachments and floor settings. Argh!
With that being said... I have had a Bissell upright that really had good suction. I also owned a steam cleaning version that had a good hose length. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/BISSELL+-+Momentum+HEPA+Bagless+Upright+Vacuum+-+Bordeaux+Pearl/9569166.p?skuId=9569166&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=9569166&ref=06&loc=01&id=1218126043779 This model 82G71 has an okay hose length of just over 15 feet and costs under $150.00.
If money is no object, you might want to look into the Dyson Ball. The DC model is around $230- ecost.com/detail.aspx?edp=52834664&sourc... And even though the pictures don't really show how the hose attaches... it says that the maximum reach is just under 29 feet. The suction in these babies is pretty good too.
If I have sold you at all on a canister vacuum, you might want to look into the Hoover S3825 Elite Cyclonic Bagless with Power Nozzle. At around $233.00 http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-S3825-Cyclonic-Bagless-Canister/dp/B001JAGYLY This puppy has the same amount of suction power you'd get from an upright! Well, I hope I've helped you out by giving you my opinion and experience with cleaning.
I'm sure you'll find the perfect machine when all the pennies are counted!
I would recommend a KIRBY UPRIGHT VACUUM, I have one and in my opinion does everything when you talk about cleaning. The vacuum has all the necessary accessories you would want for cleaning anything you could think of. It is effficient, great suction.
Hairs, don't have pets but humans around the house shed hairs too, you will be amazed how 5 people in a house can lose those hairs on the carpet or floors (gross but true) so vacuum, vacuum and vacuum some more. When my Kirby was new, I vacuum everything, I tried all the gadgets that came with it, love the carpet cleaner especially. I think it's worth the money, has been with me for around 5 years now, the vacuum I mean.
I'm not working or in any way attached to the Kirby company, just my review. My Kirby model is G5. There are new models, check site below.
Hope this helps.
Dyson from what I'm told picked up so much more stuff from your carpets than other vacuums. I've had friends that have purchased a Dyson. They vacuum their carpet with their existing unit.
Then use their new Dyson and vacuum again and it pulled more dirt and bits out.

The main clencher is the ease of using the attachment tools, with the DC25, you just extend the telescoping pole, and, voila!
You're ready to go! {the DC07 requires plugging/unplugging to use the attachment tools} I found myself attacking every corner and groove with specks of dirt/cobwebs in it (LOVE this thing for cleaning the ac intake grates and the fins of our air filters! )...most of them without ever having to bend over...." -end of quote.
Sears has a great return policy if you are not satisfied. Their vacuums come with great warranties. They are often on sale, check the weekly flyer.
Sears has a great selection. For more information, here's the link to all make and model vacuums available at Sears sears.com/shc/s/c_10153_12605_Appliances... I love mine(s), had them forever. Christine101.
Growing up, we always had a horrible time in the house with vacuums and steam cleaners. Something was always breaking. My grandmother had the same problems that my mom was having, but solved her problems years before by buying a Kirby.
She never had problems with the Kirby and convinced my mom to get one. Again, all problems solved. It's a heavy duty vacuum without the weight.
I hope to get one as well someday. My current vacuum was just a cheap model given to me when I needed one. If that new ball vacuum is as good as the people above say it is, I may check into that one also.
But unfortunately, I only know of Kirby to stand behind.
Dysons perhaps.... or a small compact shark. :).
I found that if I go to vacuum-critic.com" rel="nofollow">vacuum-critic.com they have this online assistant tool, it really is pretty good. You tell them your needs and issues that you need a cleaner to deal with and they respond by giving you personally a selection of cleaners that fit all of your requirements. Then they find the cheapest place on the internet to buy it.

You definitely want a Dyson. I have four long-haired cats and I had a Bissell vacumn that had set me back quite a bit. Then my husband, who has allergies, brought home a Dyson. At first I was furious at the cost, but then he used our Bissell to thoroughly vacumn our living room.
Then he used the Dyson to thoroughly vacumn our living room. The Dyson picked up SO MUCH extra dirt and hair, it was actually a little sickening to realize how much our Bissell had missed. The Bissell was immediately banished to garage-sale land and now I love my Dyson.
I've seen the Dyson Animal recommended, and since you have pets that is a spot-on recommendation, with one exception. You don't want the DC25 Animal, which rotates on a ball, you want the DC28, which has a fixed wheel. While the ball certainly does provide more mobility, the DC28 in my experience is just as easy to use (Dysons are pretty lightweight vacumns) and the suction capabilities (which you listed as a big priority) are higher without the ball.
Also, the DC28 holds more dirt in the see-through bin, so you won't have to empty it as often. Here are the comparisons between the two: DC25 DC28 Suction power: 220 245 Movement type: Ball technology wheel Bin capacity: 0.31 gallons 0.61 gallons Tools: Mini turbine head Mini turbine head stair tool stair tool Combination accessory tool Combination accessory tool Flat out head Cord length: 24.6 ft 35.2 ft Weight: 16.12 lbs 20.61 lbs You can visit www.Dyson.com for more details, but trust me, the Dyson is worth the money. It has the best suction of any vacumn I've ever used, and I've tried just about every brand over the years including Eureka, Hoover and of course, Bissell.
The Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright Animal Vacuum Cleaner
This is the machine I have and I can't say enough good about it. We live with anywhere between 3 and 6 working Border Collies and you can imagine what kind of debri they will track in after a full day of moving stock through mud and briar patch, plus they shed...alot. The Dyson DC25 Ball is the champion of vacuums for our situation which includes all varity of flooring, wood, tile, marble, rugs and carpeting, walls, ceilings, I even use it to vacuum the dogs themselves.Anything that can be vacummed around this farmhouse gets a visit from the Animal! It stands up to the abuse I put it through without missing a beat. Believe me that I have put it to the test for going on 3 years and it still works as well as the day I first fired it up.
youtube.com/watch?v=skDXprPk4Ec A full line of great Accessories that actually get used instead of just riding around. If you have never used a Dyson then you are missing out on what a vaccum should be. I reccomend buying new and getting the outstanding warranty, which they honor without question.
A full 5 year free parts and labor. Buy direct from Dyson. Com and get free shipping.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
