What is the best way to cure lower back pain. I just hurt it while lifting something heavy yesterday and I am in PAIN! I was lifting something heavy yesterday and all of a sudden, my lower back started killing me.My lower back is now throbbing in pain, e.g. If I sit in a chair it kills.

Back Pain I had just this week looked this up for a co-worker. Straight from health.msn. Com- It says to apply ice or a cold pack to the injured area for the first 48-72 hours.

Ice the injury for 15-20 minutes and then 20 minutes off. After that initial time period apply heat to the area if the swelling is gone. Hot showers, hot packs, hot tubs and increase swelling in the first 48 hours and it's best to avoid them.

Ibuprofen, motrin or advil can be taken for swelling and pain. On that website is lists when you can and should start exercising again. It has a lot of good information on there.

Don't put a heat pack on Heat encourages swelling. An ice pack is a better bet. Lie face down and have someone rub the sore area gently.

If the muscle feels hard to them compared with their own, it may be pulled. Rest and ice can do a lot, but don’t neglect to have it seen by a doctor when you can to check there’s no skeletal or spinal damage.

If it is muscle strain/sprain Rule of thumb is; ice the first 48 hours to reduce inflammation and then after the 48 hours, alternate heat and ice. Ice on for only 20 minutes, heat can be up to one hour. Set in a straight back chair.No couch, no recliner, or such.

Something like a wingback chair, is an example of a straight back chair. It helps support the back, where as the other kinds do not give the support and also allow the back to "slump" which is not good. If you can take any of the analgesic pain meds (asprin, advil, motrin, etc) that will not only help with pain, but also will reduce the inflammation.

Try going to Walgreens or Wal-mart and get one of those back support things in the section for like knee brace, knee support, wrist support, elastic bandages. They will also have those things for putting on to support your lower back while lifting, but will also help support it if you did lift something without the support and hurt the back. If it has not gotten any better when the doctor's offices open back up on Tuesday, go to the doctor to see if worse damage has been done (other than strain/sprain).
